Construction drastically needs to go green
The 2022 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction revealed that construction sector’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions have reached an all-time high, despite efforts to increase in energy efficiency and lower energy intensity. This is a setback in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, specifically for industries to decarbonize by 2050.
The construction sectors for approximately 40% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions brought by the materials used in construction and the eventual heating, cooling, and lighting of the structure once it’s been turned over.
The way forward for the construction industry to meet Sustainable Development Goals

From “Net-zero buildings: Where do we stand?” by
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) & Arup
The building’s life cycle is split into different life cycle stages A to D, themselves divided in modules. These are described in the European Standard EN15978 (2011).
Each of these stages present an opportunity for construction projects to monitor and minimize. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) proposes the following strategies to lower embodies carbon:

Construction management software designed to drive up efficiency & quality
Whether you’re a developer/owner’s representative managing project risks, or a builder managing site resources, Steer has got you covered

How Steer Can Help
Towards Net Zero Goals
Steer has 30+ modules that help in monitoring & measuring various processes in the lifecycle of a property, from materials sourcing to construction management - all the way to demolition waste disposal
Better Selection of Building Materials
UPFRONT CARBON - PROCESS A1-A3
ISteer streamlines the supplier accreditation process by allowing suppliers to submit documents that will undergo an approval process from your team - as well as perform on-site inspection of each supplier’s manufacturing process. This way, you know you’re sourcing the materials from the right supplier that meets your sustainability standards.

Streamlined Procurement Processes
UPFRONT CARBON - PROCESS A4-A5
Steer enables more efficient materials ordering & procurement for your construction projects. For example, your teams on-site to can easily order materials on their tablet and it’s processed by HQ teams better - so you can ensure deliveries are on time and optimized to prevent wastage in materials transportation. With Steer, your team will also monitor materials usage more effectively.

Fewer Rework & Improved Reuse
UPFRONT CARBON - PROCESS A4-A5
In Steer, construction processes are more efficient and quality is driven up. Steer enables tighter collaboration among project participants: designs are better coordinated with on-site teams, change orders are clearer, and inspections are more thorough. Using Steer in construction projects results in fewer rework, ultimately saving on resources - materials, labor, and equipment.

Conscious Use, Repair, and Replacement
EMBODIED CARBON - PROCESS B1-B5
Steer offers solutions that promote better property use & management. It offers dashboards to monitor various activities during the property’s operations. Steer offers efficient monitoring of asset performance as well as track each asset’s periodic maintenance. Lastly, Steer enables users to log tickets for any ad-hoc repair and teams can better manage the workflows for these requests.

Streamlined Demolition & End-of-Life
EMBODIED CARBON - PROCESS C1-C4
With Steer, the processes surrounding a property’s end-of-life can be conducted more efficiently. From managing demolition permits, to accrediting haulers and other suppliers, to tracking the transfer or resell of assets, all the way to monitoring and ensuring optimized movement of all the waste produced upon demolition - all of this can be managed within Steer.

Finally, a construction management solution that fits you like a glove
Steer is built on top of a no-code platform, meaning you can customize solutions within Steer whichever way you want and ensure better & faster end-user adoption

Easy Visualization for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Steer, through its partnership with OneClick LCA, enables projects to calculate the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of materials based on the BOM/BOQ. Steer will provide insightful graphs and charts will appear on your dashboard so you can make data-driven decisions for materials and contribute to reaching the industry’s Sustainable Development Goals.
